Foundations of Belonging: Neuroscience of Social Isolation

  • Lisette Ostander PhD / Beyond Differences Director of Education Programs
  • Frederick / Beyond Differences Professional Development Program Manager

Description: In this first in a series of three trainings, educators will learn about the neuroscience of social isolation in order to be able to spot the behavioral warning signs and effectively intervene to foster a culture of belonging. This training sets the foundation for educators to incorporate a holistic understanding of what the research says about values exploration and its importance to identity development (training 2) and how a proactive approach to boundaries actually does more for connection (training 3). The additional trainings will take place during the Spring 2025 Virtual PD series.

Presenter Information: Beyond Differences is on a mission to inspire students to end social isolation by creating cultures of belonging. They do this through their National Teen Board, by offering free Social Emotional Learning lessons for three National Days of Action, and with free professional development training for educators. Lisette, Beyond Differences Director of Education Programs, holds a Ph.D. in Education, specializing in Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment. Frederick, Beyond Differences Professional Development Program Manager, holds an MA in Gender & Peacebuilding. Between the two of them Lisette and Frederick have over 30 years of experience in community centered work and education. They are excited to collaborate with Ohio school counselors to build belonging in the Buckeye State!

Additional Information: Pre-registration is required and will be open through the end of the day on September 29. A Zoom meeting link will be emailed out to all registrants the day before the workshop. A CE certificate will be emailed to those in attendance after the event.

The workshop is free to OSCA members and $10 for non-members. Please note that non-members who still have an outstanding balance will not be provided with a CE certificate.
